Welcome to the Wallingford Rotary Blog!

Hi everyone! I'd like to use this space to share our ideas and photos and comments throughout the year. As we add new stuff the old stuff will move to the bottom. You can add comments, participate in polls or just check in to see what's new!

Always good to hear present Rotarians express concern about the future of this annual event and offer ideas to keep it alive, or better, kick it up a full step into what it was and can be with careful honing. The BBQ does need a major spin and our club does have the talent, interest and ability to make it happen. It is most impressive that people want to " put it together" now. The Macys Thanksgiving Parade is organized for the following year only days following the event to assure planning and follow thru happen for the following months. It was smartly suggested that we have monthly meetings for the next four months to get it together. A good thing would be to hold a general meeting and conduct it like a sales seminar complete with poster boards and divide the comments into the proper areas. Today's meeting was all over the place but it actually demonstrated there are concerns in every aspect of this annual event and need for change to reflect times. This year seemed to go well yet everyone noticed a lack of advertising, signage on day of event, a sense of emptiness on the grounds, and a plan that clustered the auction, rides, cars and dunking in all too close an area. Music ends as most people arrive? Bravo to Dave Juliano for being so open and unafraid to express what a lot of people whisper. He opened the door to a successful 2008, but only if we start right away. Let's hope that new president Kaplan can focus on repairing many problems with the club in the first six months of his new year and back burner speakers and comedy until we can turn the club to a growth column and stop the draining.

Perhaps this blog can be the vehicle for some members to speak out who otherwise do not do so in the public meeting forum.

Some responses to member-suggested ideas are meet with terse and short remarks somewhat blunt.

There is a real need to return to manners, hospitality and cordial ways. No all members are A types and belong to perceived cliques.

Let's encourage our AVISO editor to PUSH this blog opportunity for membership-wide use! Good idea, Carlene

Need to be careful on speakers that we have at meetings and assure there is a separation between information and selling. Often it is a very narrow line but still Rotary can not be used as a place of sale/ infomercial.

September 6th: Has any one noticed the meals are very much the same? Perhaps the Rotary person in charge can ask the restaurant to perhaps consider that Rotarians eat more than meatballs, sauages/franks, room temp pasta, etc.? You hear a lot of comments in the food line but not loud enough for someone to make a change. What ever happened to healthy food?

The Wallingford Rotary Barbecue

As president-elect Matt Bailey was our leader this year and he did a great job! First thing this morning he showed up with coffee and donuts!! That makes the day a winner in our books! The BBQ is held the first Wednesday of August every year and we've been doing it for almost 80 years! It was hot today (8/1) but not as humid as last year. We (Anthony, Carlene and Steve R) started the day at 7 a.m. and as people arrived Anthony passed out our new "Pit Crew" t-shirts which have gotten nicer each year! We are probably the best-dressed sweaty group of men and womAn (only one) ever to cook a chicken!
